During the creation of activities, it is easy to get color on your hands. As you have probably noticed, it is not easy to remove.
This post will list some ways to remove food dye from your skin when soap or water doesn’t work. Here are some things to try:
-
Use Hand Sanitizer or Alcohol to Rub Your Hands
Hand sanitizer or rubbing alcohol is the first way to remove food color from your skin. If you have sensitive hands or are using it on small children, you may want to be careful with how much you apply. You shouldn’t require much.
Apply hand sanitizer or rub some rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab or ball. Rub it on the skin where there are dye stains. It shouldn’t take much scrubbing and should work quickly.
Rub alcohol and hand sanitizer can really hurt open cuts and dried skin. If you or your children have any irritation or scrapes, I suggest using a different way to remove food dye.
Bonus! Nail polish can be removed using this method too!
-
Shaving Cream
Shaving cream can be used to remove food dyes. It’s a great way to get food dye off kids’ skin, since it’s not harsh!
Apply the shaving foam, let it rest for 30 seconds to 1 minute and then wipe off. This should do the job without much effort.
-
Non-Gel Toothpaste
You don’t have any shaving cream at home? Use toothpaste instead!
Use a non gel, whitening paste to rub your hands for two minutes or until all the food dye has been removed.
While scrubbing, the toothpaste may dry out. The flood color should disappear after a few minutes if you just add more layers.
-
Baby Oil
You may have seen that Baby Oil easily removed permanent marker from my skin. It’s my favorite way to clean my kids after they finish a messy project.
You’ll also be happy to learn that it works on food color. It’s not harsh and only requires some baby oil on a rag.
Apply baby oil on a rag, and gently rub in small circular movements the affected area.
-
Vinegar & Baking Soda
Vinegar and baking soda work well for a variety of cleaning applications. One is stain removal.
Mix equal amounts of white vinegar with a few teaspoons of baking soda to create a paste. Apply a small amount to your skin and let it sit there for a couple of minutes. Then scrub it off.
Continue until all food dye has been removed.
-
Lemon & Salt

What causes food coloring stains?
Food coloring can be used to add color to your baked goods. How does it work exactly? Food coloring is a mixture of dyes in vibrant colors that, when mixed with water, create a rainbow-like effect. This makes it an excellent tool for tinting frosting or batter. Unfortunately, those same elements that stain your food also stain your clothes.
